Most browser mahjong is mahjong solitaire, which is a tile-matching puzzle rather than the four-player game. Tiles are stacked in a layout, and you remove matching pairs whose sides are free until the board is clear. Variants like Mahjong Connect instead link pairs with a path of up to three straight lines.
Strategy is about order: clearing tiles that unlock many others first, and avoiding pairs that bury a tile you will need. Good versions show which tiles are free, offer a shuffle when you run out of moves, and include hints for beginners.

How do you play mahjong solitaire?
Remove matching pairs of tiles. A tile can only be taken if nothing sits on top of it and at least its left or right side is open. Clear the whole layout to win.
Is this the same as four-player mahjong?
No. Mahjong solitaire uses the same tiles but is a single-player matching puzzle. Traditional mahjong is a four-player game with very different rules.
What happens if I run out of moves?
Most mahjong games offer a shuffle that rearranges the remaining tiles, and many include a hint button that shows an available pair.
