Kurofune Samurai

Kurofune Samurai is a third-person samurai action game set in 19th-century Japan. The people of Shizukana once lived well under a just lord, until he refused a trade agreement with an American delegation. The Americans armed his brother Akumo and turned him against the lord, and with those foreign weapons Akumo took power. His rule grew steadily crueler, enslaving the people and punishing anyone who could not deliver what he demanded. The villagers turn to an old samurai for help, and you play him as he sets out to investigate and fight the ruler's guards and ninjas. The clash between an old swordsman and a ruler backed by foreign weapons gives the historical setting its central tension.

Combat uses a clear keyboard-and-mouse scheme: left click to attack, scroll wheel for a secondary attack, right click to lock on, E to block, Q to roll, WASD to move, Shift to run and P to pause. Having both a block and a roll gives fights a defensive rhythm that goes beyond button mashing. It runs in WebGL on a landscape screen, so a desktop or laptop is the right device. Sessions can be as long as you like, since pausing is always available. Fights reward patience and timing more than speed, since blocking and rolling at the right moment is safer than swinging wildly.
