About Learn to Play Pitch
Pitch, also called Setback or High-Low-Jack, is a card game for four players in two partnerships. Learn to Play Pitch is a free trainer for the four-point version. You sit South, your computer partner sits North, and two computer opponents sit East and West. Each player gets six cards. Players bid 2, 3 or 4, or pass; the highest bidder becomes the pitcher, and the suit of the first card they lead becomes trump. If everyone else passes, the dealer must bid at least 2.
Each hand is worth four points: High for the highest trump played, Low for the lowest trump, Jack for capturing the jack of trump, and Game for the team with the most card value in its tricks (10 counts 10, ace 4, king 3, queen 2, jack 1). If the pitching team makes its bid it scores its points; if not, the bid is subtracted. The first team to 11 wins. A bid advisor helps you weigh your hand, legal cards glow on your turn, a light bulb button explains a recommended move, and you can pick Easy, Normal or Hard opponents.

- 2Bid 2, 3 or 4 points, or pass. The highest bidder becomes the pitcher.
- 3The pitcher leads first, and that card's suit becomes trump.
- 4On your turn, click one of the glowing cards in your hand. The highest trump wins the trick, or the highest card of the suit led if no trump is played.
- 5After six tricks, the hand is scored. The first team to 11 points wins.
Tips and strategy
- Count the points your strongest suit could win before you bid: an ace can take High, but a bid of 3 needs more than one strong card.
- As the pitcher, leading high trumps early draws out the other trumps and protects your bid.
- Save tens for tricks you can win: a 10 is worth 10 toward the Game point.
- Think about which points your partner could help you capture.
- Press the light bulb whenever you are unsure; it explains the recommended move.
